  • The Story

My influences have always been very diverse, and I never liked the idea of being stuck in one genre. I'm more of a music/digital nomad and like the freedom to experiment as it comes. Depends on where my mind went and what was affecting me at the time. Jazz has always been a big part of my life and my guitar playing has been influenced by it. I've always been fascinated by the colors and sounds of jazz, and as a guitarist, by the technicality of this music. As a producer, I draw inspiration from 80's pop, 70's progressive rock, world music and electronic music. But as a guitarist, I'm heavily influenced by blues, flamenco and artists like Pat Metheny or George Benson. This mix sounds like what I call a "Jazzy Lounge". The album "Reminiscence" is a strong and obvious step in this direction

Soul To Soul is another attempt to go one step further and reach the planet Smooth Jazz. From jazzy lounge to smooth jazz, the line is very narrow and it is a very interesting trip. I've thoroughly enjoyed this journey and can't wait to see where it takes me in the future... "Soul to Soul" was recorded during the Covid lockdown. I went to Morocco, but ended up being blocked there because the border with Spain was closed. I rented a small studio apartment overlooking the ocean, where, to pass the time, I started doing soul-to-soul recordings with a MacBook, a small audio interface, and a nylon guitar that I carried with me. I had Laurent Faucheux on drums for another track I was recording and decided to use it as the groove base. Bassist Roberto Briot was locked down in Thailand.

I sent him the track and he recorded his bass there. I ended up being blocked in Morocco for a full year! I didn't want to wait to mix the song, so I did it on headphones. Mixing on headphones can be a very challenging thing to do when you are used to have a proper recording studio. But music is also about challenges and sometimes pushing your limits in a restricted situation forces you to focus on the essential. I thought I would do a new mix once I got home but on my way back my hard drive got destroyed 🙁 So that mix was the mix 🙂 Latter I had an idea to record a new version (Soul to Soul - 2022 version). And give it the sound that I wanted in the first place. In the end you have two versions of the same track 🙂
